The Japanese Maple - A Tree For All Seasons

The Japanese Maple - A Tree For All Seasons

I often refer to myself as a “plant enabler”, a sort of legal dealer that tries his best to hook his customers up with the best plants for their landscapes.  Plants are easy to get addicted to, believe me, and running a garden center means you are surrounded on a daily basis by treasures that beckon you to take them home, plant them, and watch them flourish - even if you are out of room, just ask my poor wife.  If I jump in a time machine to some 30 years ago, I can see…

The Fabulous Fall Color Season

The Fabulous Fall Color Season

In our PNW climate, there is so much to appreciate about the fall season.  Gardeners are in the midst of harvesting their summer bounties of edibles and getting their gardens ready for the coming winter, all the while pondering where to move this plant, when to divide that one, and where to add something new.  As we have been discussing the last few weeks...

Fall Is For Planting!

Fall Is For Planting!

My favorite time of year is upon us, and Mother Nature is about to brighten all of our lives with the stunning colors of the fall season.  The nights are getting longer but the temperatures are still warm and pleasant, and the rains (sorry to remind you!) are coming soon...

Ornamental Grasses: Plumage and Fall Color

Ornamental Grasses: Plumage and Fall Color

Ornamental grasses provide many desirable qualities to our home landscapes and containers, especially in the fall season.  They add wonderful texture, color and structure, and when the breeze blows they also add motion and sound to any garden.  There are essentially two types...

September Garden Projects

September Garden Projects

Let me be transparent and state that, without a doubt, fall is my favorite time of the year.  As a local native, I like my weather partly cloudy with temperatures in the 65 to 70 degree range and hopefully some rain, but only from 10pm to 6am or so.  Is that too much to ask from Mother Nature?  Sounds perfect for outdoor projects in the fall - not too hot, not too cold, but just right for us gardeners...

More Summer Blooming Shrubs

More Summer Blooming Shrubs

As we pass the midpoint of summer and head towards fall, numerous plants continue to shine in our local gardens.  Two standouts in particular are looking great, adding bright flowers, nice foliage and ornamental berries to the landscape...

50 Shades Of Brown

50 Shades Of Brown

First off, my apologizes to writer E.L. James for riffing on his popular novel title “50 Shades of Grey”.  I rather doubt that my comments here will ever make it to the big screen.  Just the same, the month of December in my garden is a pretty steamy mix of tan, brown, or black (and all the shades in between) emanating from foliage, seed heads, and bark, and frankly, I find it pretty stimulating…

Daylight Saving Time — Can we please just make up our minds?

Daylight Saving Time — Can we please just make up our minds?

It was 20 years ago in the spring that I wrote my first diatribe about the ill effects of daylight-saving time and how, while I love being on daylight-saving time, it is the change that gives me so much grief.  The same can be said for the fall when we go back onto standard time.  I don’t know how you feel about all of this, but I still feel the same as I did 20 years ago and for me the…
